Why am I bloated and constipated when I'm living on raw food?

I've eaten nothing but fruit and raw vegetables and nuts since Monday and I'm constipated - when I wasn't before.

Fruit and veg are suppose to be wonders for curing constipation not causing it so what's wrong with me? I'm just so bloated and sluggish. Why am I bloated and constipated when I'm living on raw food?
You are most likely constipated and bloated because of your quick switch-over to eating foods with lots of fiber. Anytime you switch from eating little fiber to lots of fiber, that's going to happen because you're overwhelming your system with so much material to process. My advice is, since the RDA for fiber is 20 to 35 grams, start slow with 20 grams and work your way up to 40. Also, Metamucil, prunes and magnesium supplements may ease your constipation. You can still do this while eating raw; there are plenty of fruits and veggies with less fiber: bananas, avocados, etc.Why am I bloated and constipated when I'm living on raw food?
Some fruits and vegetables are good for it, others not. I think banana actually stops you up. If you really want to be less constipated, you need more fiber, and you're not going to get it just eating only fruits and veggies. If you can, add some grain to your diet: granola, bread, heck even a fiber bar helps. If nothing else, then get the powdered kind you can add to drinks. It will help. But fruits and vegs alone won't give you enough fiber to have normal bowel movements, especially when you're eatting a lot of them. Not to mention, cooking sometimes breaks down raw food in the process, which helps your body digest it easier. Perhaps eating it raw is keeping your body from that as well.

If I switch my dog to a RAW food diet will her breath and teeth improve?

I just adopted an 8 year old Maltese and her teeth look yucky, but not horrible. A couple are missing. She has terrible breath. Really really bad.If I switch my dog to a RAW food diet will her breath and teeth improve?
I can only answer this question based on my own personal experience.

I switched my 7 year old Kelpie to an all raw diet and his breath is soooo much better and his teeth are lovely and white. If I switch my dog to a RAW food diet will her breath and teeth improve?
LOL - Ok how many ways can you phrase this question???

There is no good advice until after she has seen a vet. They will be able to tell you the most accurate answer since we can't examine her teeth. She will most likely need more teeth removed %26amp; vet can show you how to brush them for maintenance. There is nothing til then that is going to magically make her breath better. It is very important given the condition of her teeth to do this soon before it cause more health issues for her.If I switch my dog to a RAW food diet will her breath and teeth improve?
Here is a copy of an anser I just gave to another dog question:

Based on my past experience you are not going to like my answer but here goes. The major cause of bad breath in humans is the tongue where bacteria grow and produce the bad breath. It is the same for the dog. Dog bad breath is primarily due to the bacteria on the tongue. In order to "cure" bad breath this bacteria must be removed on a regular basis. The only tongue cleaner that Iknow of that can be used on a dog is OraBrush because it is both a brush and a scraper. It is very gentle but effective. I have seen a Vet clean a dog's tongue with OraBrush and it worked very well. Here is their website if you are interested: http://www.orabrush.com Mints and gum or similar products for the dog just cover up the bad breath for a short time. To get rid of bad breath you must remove the cause of bad breath.

Any advide re a raw food plan? What to expect? How to go about it? ?

Just to get me started.

I can't even make yogurt.

I don't have a dehydrator or anything like that.

I do have sprouting equipment.

I want to give it a go and see if it works for me.

My goals are to eat more healthily and gain more energy.

I don't have a lot of access to organic veg.

I am a complete newbie so I would appreciate help from first principals.Any advide re a raw food plan? What to expect? How to go about it? ?
if you are looking at changing your eating habit the raw food diet is one of the worst thing you can do.

we are omnivores this means that we have a varied diet. some of the nutrient contained in meat for example can not be digested unless they are cooked. i would suggest that if you are looking for a fitter and healthier life style, you may want to look ate the paleo diet.

it's easy to follow, very close to our ancestral diet.

and believe me it works, i lost 6 st in 6 month on that basis.

i am also a professional chef that works for 2 weight loss camps so i do know what i am talking aboutAny advide re a raw food plan? What to expect? How to go about it? ?
If you start on a raw food diet, then chances are you won't have more energy, you'll have a lot less. It takes an awful lot of time, preparation a knowledge to get all the nutrients and calories you'll be needing from a raw food diet, simply cos there's so much you simply can't eat, and of course, popping vitamin pills and supplements would kinda defeat the object of it all.

my advice would be to either go vegetarian (if you're not) or vegan (if you're veggie but still think you're not eating healthily) I'd definitely cook everythign from scratch, no ready meals, no ready made sausages or fake meat, just load up your trolley with fresh veg and stuff and cook some really good things. and good luck!Any advide re a raw food plan? I think you will lose out on energy because of the stress of so minutely controlling your diet. Have a plan but keep it flexible. Don't make hard and fast rules that you will feel guilty about if you break them. Guilt is a killer! Just do what you can with what you can and see how it goes. You have not signed a contract - the food police are not going to take you away in the middle of the night! I hope you get where I am coming from as I mean no harm. If this way of eating suits you, you will learn as you go along. Also take time to consider how this will impact on your social life and your friends. It is a huge undertaking and don't underestimate it.Any advide re a raw food plan? What to expect? How to go about it? ?
Congrats on your excellent goal of eating raw food. Firstly start slow - perhaps 50 raw 50 cooked and gradually go to higher percent raw. There are plenty of sites for raw food recipes. Do smoothies, grow your sprouts, make pates from the sprouts and put on veggies, juice greens and all this will reduce your desire for cooked food. You don't need any fancy equipement for sprouting_sprout bags and/or jars are good. Ensure that you eat the sprouts with just the little bud before it starts to turn into a plant. Dehydrating can be substituted with low oven temps - I never did that cause i have a dehydrator. Find those foods that your mind and body agree with. For example, coconuts and avocados agree with me very much. Slow changes are the most long lasting. Good luck!

  • Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?

We have an English Mastiff who is 11 mo old. My husband is 100% up for it. Will it positivlvy benefit our pup?Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?
Before making a decision to do raw, you need to do a LOT of research! There are several ways you can go, from total raw, to a percentage, to make your own, to store bought/pre-packaged raw.

I would worry about putting a large breed puppy on it, however. I have a 10 month old that we switched to raw, and he got pano. We switched him back, and he's been fine. We might try switching him again when he's older.

It takes committment, and it takes education on the topic. You have to make sure that your dog's diet is TOTALLY balanced!Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?
Yes it will. Don't worry overmuch about a balanced diet - give him a good variety - balanced doesn't mean ever meal, it means overall. Do a search on Google for BARF diet and you'll get plenty of information. I believe there is also a raw-food Yahoo group too. It will be far better for him than feeding him 100% processed food, which is what any commercial diet is.
i think it would be healthy for your dog...as long as you also give him the specific vitamins he needs which are contained in packaged foods....but be careful with choosing where you get your raw meat from as the meat we eat isnt so good for dogs...we have had a dog die from too much "chemical" in supossedly raw meat!!!!Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?
Most vets are 100% against it. Remember, your dog is no longer a wolf, and that diet causes many problems from bacterial infections, diarrhea that turns to blood, and the rest of it. (Talk to your vet... it's too long to discuss here) I don't know how familiar you are with dogs, how many you have had, but from my experiences --- 40 years!!!--- it is far more trouble than it is worth. I have had dogs all my life, and thoroughly looked into that when it became a faddy thing to do.... Nope, don't want the problems.

All my dogs have lived long, healthy, happy lives with shining coats, and boundless energy.... What else is there????
I have been using the raw food diet with my dog since we got him as a puppy. Our breeder was into everything holistic, so we went with it as our last dog died young on a kibble diet. He is now four and is doing great. He loves his food, is a great weight, and looks good. He is also active and healthy. There are some really easy ways to feed raw food too. You can buy it frozen in a pet store and all you have to do is unfreeze it and serve it.Should I put my Dog on the raw food Diet?

How would you let people know about the healthiest whole raw food, & Home Based Business Op, paying 20%?

I always seem to get my questions removed for giving out to much information. But I really would like to know the answer to this question and not have my question removed. Mila is Sugar-free, Gluten-free,Trans-fat-free. It has 3000 Omegas pure package. How would you let people know about the healthiest whole raw food, %26amp; Home Based Business Op, paying 20%?
I would by eating it consistently with my other food. Let people know how great it makes me feel because of the omegas in it. Which is something A lot of people don't know is a very essential fatty acid to many lack. Who doesn't want healthy skin, improved neural brain function, better hair, nice cardiovascular system and best of all a natural fat loss aid that improves metabolism.

Most of our ancestors ate a lot of fish (loaded with Omegas)

So many have a you could say, a natural "bond" with this important EFA(essential fatty acid) that has long been forgotten when we switched to other sources of food.

Gluten Allergy is a wide spread problem, far to many don't even know they have!

So always getting blood work done to determine any food intolerance/allergies. Is your best bet to stay away from foods that your body rejects and makes cortisol shoot up in your body, therefor causing fat gains at times.

Dr. Coates backs it up 100%. Purely potent, well harvested Mila is a great contribution to any ones diet.

In A Vegan Raw Food DIet what else do you have to eat besides fruit and vegies to get all the vitamins?

like you wont get enough nutrients just from fruit and vegetables i heard so what else do you eat to get all the nutrients? i heart like nuts? but what kind or what is it?In A Vegan Raw Food DIet what else do you have to eat besides fruit and vegies to get all the vitamins?
Vitamin B12 is avaliable only from animal sources (meat, egg yolks, and cheese). A lack of vitamin B12 is often seen in vegans, and if left untreated, results in neurological damage (brain damage) and anaemia. The Vegan Society, the Vegetarian Resource Group, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine all reccomend that vegans take vitamin B12 supplements.

Besides this, vitamin D (which we get from the sunlight) is often seen lacking in vegans. This is because we need Calcium to absorb it, and many soy products don't have as much Calcium as animal milk. However, there are certain mushrooms which contain small amounts of vitamin D, but these are hard to get hold of. Lack of calcium and vitamin D can cause rickets, osteoporosis, and osteomalacia.

Iodine deficiencies are observed in vegans who don't use large amounts of salt, as most people get iodine from animal products. It can be obtained by eating multivitamins or frequently eating kelp. Iodine deficiencies lead to hypothyroidism, depression, goitre, mental slowing, weight gain, and other problems.

There are other deficiencies, but these are the most severe. If you want to live as a vegan diets are often advertised as being "wholesome and natural" with health benefits, but there are far more health risks involved. On top of this, many of the meat-alternative products and multivitamins that are taken cause more animal deaths and discomforts than simply living on a vegetarian diet (allowing milk and eggs), due to the manner in which they must be obtained. However, if you are convinced that this is the lifestyle you want, you should take multivitamins for vegans (there are many products avaliable) which include most, if not all, of the commonly lacking nutrients. In A Vegan Raw Food DIet what else do you have to eat besides fruit and vegies to get all the vitamins?
nuts, wheat, rice, corn products and cereal products but really if man was meant not to eat meat, fish etc then God would not have put them on the earth - think about it
To the person who mentioned B12, yes it is in animal products, but I believe it is also in nutritional yeast, but this is not a raw product as far as I know of....but it is a vegan product. In A Vegan Raw Food DIet what else do you have to eat besides fruit and vegies to get all the vitamins?
guacamole and salsa, food 'cooked' slowly in a dehydrator, bean sprouts, which are very high in nutrients.
Man was not meant to eat raw grains and beans. I'm not understanding your last two questions, though. In A Vegan Raw Food DIet what else do you have to eat besides fruit and vegies to get all the vitamins?
I use nuts for protein and avocados and olive oil for healthy fats. Get some raw almonds which you might be able to find at HEB, Whole foods, and some local health food stores. Soak 1 cup of the nuts in filtered drinking water for about 6 - 12 hours. You can soak longer than that if you like. When you're done soaking them you should rinse them at least 2 times. Go ahead and eat one, they are actually kind of sweet. To make some really good milk from the nuts put the cup of soaked nuts into a blender with some water (about 2 cups water to start with). Blend them up really good and add water as you go to get the thickness or thiness that you like. You can add agave necture or a raw sugar to sweeten it up if you like. When you're done blending them up really well strain the liquid out of the nuts. I use a small hand held wire strainer and pour in just enough to fill it to the top, then I use a spoon to press the liquid out of the nuts. Once I've done that, I dump the nut mixture out and do it again until I've strained all of the milk out. You can use this milk to put into your green smoothies or even on your cereal. It's a good source of protein. Other than that you can get green powder at a health food store, it's not very tasty though. I also take blue green algae tablets. Best of luck to you. I forgot to mention that B12 is in blue green algae which is also called spiralina. Someone at your local health food store can help you pick out which is best for you.
