The amount of raw food you give should amount to about 1-3% of the dog's total body weight. Abby's sites are also very helpful.

How to start the Raw Food Diet?

I want to start this diet. I've done so much research and learned so many awesome things about it but I still feel like I need direction. I was wondering if you can start the raw food diet by just eating non-organic fruits and veggies. I would by the organic but it's to pricey for me.

Is it okay to try the diet and just eat:

bananas

oranges

apples

grapes

clemetines

strawberries

kiwi fruit

carrots

broccoli

What do you think about Naked Smoothies? How to start the Raw Food Diet?
To be successful on the Raw Food diet you are going to need to eat way more than what you have listed. You need more variety. Everything you listed is good but you NEED protein too. Try adding to what you have:

Leafy greens

seaweed

raw nuts (soaked first)

mushrooms

beans

lentils

pinapple

watermelon

dates

raw honey

super foods (goji, raw cacao, chia etc)

zucchni

nutritional yeast

(vitamin B12 suppliment)

tomatoes

peppers

onions

garlic

Any other fruits and veggies you can get your hands on. You can start with nonorganic if that's what you need to do.

Good luck.

Keep your doctor informed so you can monitor your health. How to start the Raw Food Diet?
No.

For one thing, you'd get bored and quit within a week.

For another, your diet contains no fat, which in addition to being what makes you feel full, is necessary for assimilation of certain nutrients.

Add some raw nuts and avocados, and some leafy greens.

The best books to start with are "Raw Food Made Easy" by Jennifer Cornbleet, and "The Complete Book of Raw Food" by Lori Baird and Julie Rodwell. its quite fine but you have to add more proteinsHow to start the Raw Food Diet?
Yes you cn eat non-organic on a raw food diet and it's better than not eating any fruit or veggies. Citrus, avocados, pineapple for example rarely have pesticides found on them. The raw food diet is more than a diet. You make your own choices such as you have here. But yur list is sorely lacking in vegetables and greens. Fruits do have plenty of protein and are loaded with vitamins and some minerals that are high in antioxidants for example and lots of other good things. But vegetables and greens are high in minerals and some vitamins. All plants have omega-3 but greens have the most. You want to eat plenty of greens to soak your body's tissue in omega-3s. there is so much omega-6 in our diets and they compete for positions in cells with Omega-3. This cause a lot of our immune problems and auto-immune diseases. Definitely eat everything on your lists-- that is good but make sure to add any vegetables you like and especially greens-- romaine, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, kale, curly kale, spinach etc. You can put them in fruit smoothies, juice them and make huge salads. You're definitely on the right track. I cured myself of breast cancer, fibromyalgia and a long list of health problems 11 years ago and I'm in perfect health still today. Nurse Sue

What is the hardest part of a raw food diet?

I'm trying a raw food diet, and I'm finding it really hard. I'd really appreciate your story and what you found hard or easy about the raw food diet.

I'm new to this so anything would help me out in sticking to this diet.

Thank youWhat is the hardest part of a raw food diet?
The beginning! Stay focused and assure yourself that you are doing this for good cause. Grab a few inspirational books or articles on success stories of people gone raw.

Temptations, cravings, hunger pangs, and even emotional memories associated with "bad" foods will drive you nuts in the beginning, but they become fewer and farther between. Accept these feelings instead of fighting them, and then move on to the next day. As you go further down the road of raw, those bad foods will become almost nauseating, really!!

Not having the warmth of heated foods going down your pipes. This should pass soon.

Detox symptoms. If you are very toxic, these may be extreme. If you ever find yourself having symptoms that you cannot handle, cook yourself some steamed veggies or a baked sweet potato. This sops or slows down the detoxing effect and will enable you to carry on the next day. Know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that the grass IS greener on the other side!!!

One of the hardest parts for me was watching all the videos on raw food chefs making a myriad of wonderful meals, knowing that my kitchen and my funds could not support this eloquent way of "un"-cooking. This is when I realized that the best path to rawness is keeping it simple. I also learned that if you can't afford organic foods all the time, find a list of foods that are usually safe if not bought organic.

Good luck! What is the hardest part of a raw food diet?
Many people consider that the most challenging aspects of raw dieting are fighting food cravings and learning how to deal with social situations when you're raw and can't eat traditional food.

Most people aren't born into raw households, so they eventually transition to raw diets sometime in their adulthood. By the time you are an adult, you're likely to have a bunch of food addictions - either to carbonated drinks, cookies, chocolate, chips, coffee, pizza, or whatever else you just can't imagine yourself living without. Not consuming any of these for a very long time will usually generate a feeling of craving for that specific food.Luckily, there are ways to beat food addictions and to adjust yourself to social situations where the others aren't raw. The resources i mentioned might give you an idea of what they are. What is the hardest part of a raw food diet?
im currently a vegan, and i have tried the raw vegan diet for a week but i found it really difficult. mostly because i dont know how to cook, and raw food diets require creativity when i comes to making meals. i lack any sort of creativity. also, as im probably the poorest person i know, it costs quite a bit getting a large variety of raw recipes. for that week, i relied heavily on water, lettuce, and cucumber. the only good thing is, i lost quite a bit of weight from my diet. What is the hardest part of a raw food diet?
Im doing the same, but im juicing all my fruits and vegitables. Its easier to get down and mixing the fruit into the drinks takes the bad vegitable flavor away somewhat so its really doable. Im a hardcore meat and potatoes guy. All I eat, along with bread and cheese. So going from that to this, juicing wasnt to bad.

I am on my 12th day and im down 15lbs and I feel better, sleep better, no more snoring, more energy so im not always in the lazy mood, being a diabetic type1 I noticed my blood sugar is lower and more in control, and the amounf of insulin I take a day is lower by half already.

You will be hungry alot when you start, and you will crave so many foods also, but just no that your supposed to drink (if you juice it) up ti 8-12 16oz cups of whatever you feel like juicing. If you eat then make sure you eat enough as well.

If you feel sick or bad doing this, dont think that what your doing is bad or raw food is bad, its just all the **** inside your body like parasites etc acting up because they no longer have processed crap to feed off of. And they are pissed about it. You will need to crap alot also, because the diet will fluch all your bad left over crap away. So prepare lol.

To be honest though, cooking all your vegitables and eating fish isnt bad either, its incredibly healthy. No need to go to the EXTREME and just eat raw this and that. Just cut the processed fave packages **** at the store.

Think about this, why are humans so sick today compared to hunter gatherers of the past? Look at the diets. In fact compare us today and our diets to any civilization in the past before the invention of wheat.
The hardest part is surviving

Why don't any of the raw food cookbooks or recipe sites have many main meals?

There are heaps of desserts, entrees, soups, dips, crackers etc but hardly any "main meals".

Why is this? This is the most important type of meal.

My 10-year-old has been put on a raw food diet by his physician. I know that it will be difficult to follow and I'm interested in finding as many recipes and resources as I can to make this transition as painless as possible for him. Any ideas? (i.e., books, websites, etc.)What are some good resources for a raw food diet?
I just bought the book "Dining in the Raw" by Rita Romano and it is very consise and informative. I hope you can find it at a library- if not, it lists at $19.95. I have other books but I like this one best.

I follow a part raw gluten-free vegan diet and this book has answered many q. for me.

Both have good recipes that don't require specialty equipment, and "The Complete Book of Raw Food" is packed with information and resources. I just got Ani Phyo’s “Ani’s Raw Food Desserts” which is full of terrific recipes. So far I have tried the coconut ice cream, chocolate covered bananas, and filled truffles. All have been super.

I usually start the day with a smoothie. (Frozen bananas, fresh OJ, agave nectar) Frozen bananas are great to have on hand, because when you put them through a juicer or a grinder, it's just like soft serve ice cream. Or put frozen bananas, almond milk, cocoa powder and agave nectar in the blender for a chocolate milkshake.
Other staples of mine include cashew ranch dip, flax seed tostadas, guacamole, nut burgers, onion bread, and I came up with a really good (slightly salty) caramel dip for apples, and a passable nacho cheese.

You will probably want a dehydrator to make crackers and sweets, (mine is a Nesco and it was only $35) and a spiral slicer to make pasta.

Hi Sassy, you've had some good answers so far. All I'll add is that it's important to make the basis of his diet dark leafy greens. My daughter loves banana shakes - which I make with bananas, ground linseed, spinach and a liquid, such as orange juice or a nut milk, in the blender. You can substitute nearly everything he likes with a raw food version, from pizzas to cakes and ice cream. What are some good resources for a raw food diet?

You will love Raw Food Essentials by Ani Phyo. One of her goals is to make raw food palatable and appealing to younger children, so I really think this is the book for you. There are a lot of dehydrated snacks you can make using a food dehydrator. And you will definitely need a food processor. Dehydrators can be slightly expensive (the best brand is Excalibur), food processors not so much.

If you favor raw foods, please offer one of your favorite recipes. How is a raw food lifestyle better for the environment?
Though I am not a raw foodist, I think it is a great way of life, especially if you grow your own food. It is better for the environment because it cuts out all the energy needed for processing, packaging, and cooking (to an extent, I think to be considered raw, it can't be cooked any higher than about 116 degrees F). On a diet like this, you get the full potential and nutritional benefit of the food item and you eat no meat (if you do you are taking a big, reckless chance). Going on a tangent, meat is horrible for the environment considering all the land and water it takes to "grow" the animals, the emissions of methane from all those cows, the waste they create pollutes our oceans and water sources, the transporting all the animals to and from the slaughterhouses, the packaging, the cutting down of rainforest to grow soy just to feed chickens, I could go on....

I feed both my dogs raw, and i love this book.

Also, here is a website that has some general info.

Feeding raw is not easy, it involves lots of research.

Nature's variety has a great frozen raw food, and even with that i still feed Nupro Complete for a vitamin suppliment. just to be safe.

Carol Alt, the former supermodel, has a book and is coming out with a new one this month ( I'm not sure of the titles, but try Amazon.). A salad technically is raw food, so it really is not so "Barf".
I bought my dog, a purebred Basenji from a breeder who does shows (my Dog's sire won best-in-breed this year at Westminster). This person absolutely advocated the BARF diet. When my dog was a puppy her number one treat was chicken wings and necks. I would occasionally give her beef ankles. This breeder swore by the diet and had all of her dogs on the BARF diet. There was also a service (I don't remember which) that would mail BARF patties frozen (combo of raw meat, and veggies). My dog hated those.

After some discussion on the internet, and after seeing my dog's butt explode in a diarhea cascade on multiple occassions I decided to not do the BARF diet. My dog was on the BARF diet for about 9 months. I really couldn't find any scientific evidence either way, so I decided to go with an organic, high-protein dog food which I mix with cooked meat. The butt explosion problem was solved.

    Here are some BARF links:

Innova even has a brand of dry dog food that has no fillers. It's just meat. Either way you look at it you're going to find controversy on the internet between dog owners on this subject. If you haven't done so, please Google for some of the negative effects that dog owners have experienced with BARF (bones puncturing intestines, etc).

I'm not expert, but this has been my personal experience.Where are the raw food ingredients?
Neither the American Veterinary Association nor the British Veterinary Association endorses the health benefits of raw food. Both organizations caution that animals fed raw meat run the risk of contracting food-borne illnesses. The British veterinary group declares that "there is no scientific evidence base to support the feeding of raw meat and bones," and warns humans they risk exposing themselves to bacteria like salmonella."[11]

    Quote from article:

"Since dogs are a potential source for several zoonotic pathogens, feeding raw meats to dogs is also a public health concern (5). Given the current popularity of the BARF diet, concern about environmental contamination with Salmonella spp. from the stools of dogs fed this diet is obvious. There are no published studies examining that aspect of this nutritional trend. The present, preliminary study was conducted to determine if dogs fed a BARF diet shed Salmonella spp. in their stools."

    Quote from article

"There is currently inadequate information regarding the safety of raw diets in terms of both animal and human disease. However, considering the variety of infectious and potentially zoonotic pathogens identified here and in other studies, the potential risks must be taken seriously. Given these safety concerns, the absence of any scientific data indicating beneficial health effects of raw diets, and nutritional deficiencies that have been reported with such diets, it is difficult to recommend their use at this point. Veterinarians should discuss the risks of raw diets to pet owners who have decided to feed these diets. As reports of real and potential problems with raw diets increase, liability issues could arise if veterinarians do not discuss the potential risks, particularly if they are recommending or selling raw diets. Factors that should be discussed include safe handling of raw diets, disin

Raw Foods: What is the difference between dehydrated, freeze dried and evaporated for food and spices?

I am adding more raw foods but confused!Raw Foods: What is the difference between dehydrated, freeze dried and evaporated for food and spices?
dehydrate Dehydration (hypohydration) is the removal of water (hydro in ancient Greek) from an object.

to remove bound water or hydrogen and oxygen from (a chemical compound) in the proportion in which they form water b : to remove water from (as foods)

    Freeze Dry

to dry (as food) in a frozen state under high vacuum especially for preservation Freeze drying (also known as lyophilization) is a dehydration process typically used to preserve a perishable material or make the material more convenient for transport. Freeze drying works by freezing the material and then reducing the surrounding pressure and adding enough heat to allow the frozen water in the material to sublime directly from the solid phase to gas.

Evaporation is the process by which molecules in a liquid state (e.g. water) spontaneously becomes a gas (e.g. water vapor), without being heated to the boiling point. It is the opposite of condensation. Generally, this manifests as the gradual disappearance of the liquid, when exposed to a significant volume of gas.Raw Foods: What is the difference between dehydrated, freeze dried and evaporated for food and spices?
Dehyration is done with heat, Freeze drying is just that the product is frozen and the air removed and the product is then processed and the evaporation like in distilled water, is heated and then the vapour is removed and refined like with a concentrated product..

Evaported Milk is just heated to remove the excess moisture, Taster's Choice Coffee is a freeze dried product, dehydrated products include raisins, apple, apricots and prunes. All have some level of water or moister removed to process the food.

As the one person said the Greeks and Ancient Romans started the dehyration process and evaporation was a later issue, freeze drying was discovered around the mid -1800's.

Has anyone ever used Nature's Variety Raw Dog Food? What do you think of it? How does your pet do on it?

Are you're pets any healthier on the raw food than the dry? Do you feed it to your dogs or cats or both? Have any conditions or diseases they had gotten better? Did they like it? Any other info/input is welcome. Thanks!Has anyone ever used Nature's Variety Raw Dog Food? What do you think of it? How does your pet do on it?
It's a pretty good raw food, although it has some things mixed into it in the cat variety that are unnecessary. However, it's readily available and convenient to feed, and certainly much better than dry of any kind. Dry food, by necessity, has grains in it that can cause sensitivities in dogs and cats. Our pets fed dry are much more likely to have skin issues like excessive shedding, urinary tract issues, inflammatory bowel disorders or "sensitive" stomachs. They also become obese on dry food because the nutrition is so diluted with the grains. They aren't satiated by dry food, and eat, and eat, and eat. This may also increase the risk of diabetes, particularly in cats who as carnivores are more at risk for issues with carbohydrates.Has anyone ever used Nature's Variety Raw Dog Food? What do you think of it? How does your pet do on it?
Yes I use there raw wet and dry food.. My dogs love it...
My 7 year old standard poodle used to scratch her face incessantly. Her lips would swell up and bleed because of the scratching. For 6+ years, we searched for a food she could tolerate- found nothing- we finally started an exclusion diet- she did fine on just chicken- but any time we tried to add a starch, the scratching started up again- we found a dog food that she did "okay" on- and we were able to control her itching to some degree with medication. She has also had very thin/soft hair for a poodle, which we thought was just "her"

We finally found the Nature's Variety Raw, and feed her venison and rabbit alternating- she no longer scratches- EVER- AT ALL! Her hair is getting darker, thicker, and more coarse- more like real poodle hair!

I would say that, for us, the NV food was the solution for her!

Also, she used to have occasional issues with reflux- now that she's on the raw, she doesn't do that anymore, either.Has anyone ever used Nature's Variety Raw Dog Food? What do you think of it? How does your pet do on it?
My Dog has done really great on Nature's variety, it seems very palatable as he never skips a meal. The benefits have been a healthier, shinier coat, nicer breath and less poop to pick up. More recently I have just stopped using the raw for convenience reasons and just feed the Nature's Variety Kibble and canned food. I like the idea of raw but it got to be a hassle at times, especially with making sure you thaw the nuggets and also changing out his dog bowls Every feeding to prevent cross contamination. I stick w/ the chicken and Brown rice because the Instinct was too high in protein and no fiber so it gave him horrible gas.
I feed my dogs the Nature's Variety Frozen Raw Dog Food. And they love it. Sometimes I forget to de-thaw it and then I use the wet food. They really like it and their skin seems smoother.Has anyone ever used Nature's Variety Raw Dog Food? What do you think of it? How does your pet do on it?
I use it. I feed one of my dogs a half raw half kibble diet (raw in the morning and kibble at night). She LOVES it... can hardly put the bowl down before she is trying to get her head in it.

Her coat is very smooth, but other than that, I haven't noticed much of a difference. Her knee condition has not progressed much since August, but I don't know if it is from the raw food or from the supplement she is on.

What are your raw food diet tips?

I am trying to get into the raw food diet.

I am wondering though, what foods I can have and what I should avoid.

Also, does it get easier over time? Do sugar cravings go away? What are your raw food diet tips?
Well, there are many different views and trends in raw foodism, but one thing everyone seems to agree on is that you need to eliminate processed foods. This means no junk, carbonated drinks, chips, popcorn, chocolate, pizza, cookies, ice-cream, and the likes. Lucky for you, there are tons of healthy raw deserts out there that you can learn to prepare yourself and that taste amazing and don't even seem raw! And yes, there are ways to work around cravings as well. Check out the first link i included in the resource box for a recipe to a lovely raw desert.

You will also need to focus primarily on incorporating more fresh, raw, organic, plant-based meals into your diet. Since consuming raw foods of animal origin poses several health risks, most raw foodists are vegan. This does not mean you will be lacking in protein and fats, there are raw alternatives out there that can provide you with everything you need. The second link i included in the source box might give you some ideas!

Hope i have been helpful. Good luck in your raw journey!

It really depends on your calorie intake. You will most likely loose 2-3 pounds per week if you limit your calories by eating 100% raw foods, with a big emphasis on raw fruits and vegetables. In six weeks you could expect to lose between 12 and 18 pounds. Best of luck to you!

Will I lose too much weight on a raw food diet?

I want to go on a raw food diet but I'm scared that I am going to lose a lot of weight. I am 5'3 and 115 pounds and I would like to stay that way. Is there a way I can maintain this weight on a raw diet? Will I lose too much weight on a raw food diet?
It's not a diet - it's more a way of life. If you eat a raw food diet only then you will be taking in a lot of nuts and to be quite honest the food I've eaten at raw food dinners has been amazing and nutrient packed! We have a restaurant by us who does raw food theme nights - Complete mexican nights and chinese food nights...it's insane! So there is a lot of food that you can eat on a raw food diet plus a lot of dessert you can eat as well. Plus you can eat more because you are digesting everything easier and you will be more hungry because the food goes through you so quickly.

Hi Liz-- When i was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago I immediately changed my diet to all raw foods. I hadn't expected to lose weight but I immediately lost 10 pounds. I didn't want to lose any more at 110 pounds so I started eating more raw foods -- more calories and that did it. i still maintain the same weight today after these 11 years on raw foods at 108 pounds which is perfect for me at 5'5 1/2". BTW I'm in perfect health also from my raw food diet. Never sick, sleep 5 hours a night never have to worry about weight gian or loss, tons of energy and lots more. I eat greens, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Not a lot of nuts but occasionally in a nut crust from a raw apple pie and a handful of raw cashews now and then for example. I think it's all about the total calories as far as weight loss and gain goes. Nurse SueWill I lose too much weight on a raw food diet?
A raw vegan diet is the most healthy diet that one can consume! When we are eating how nature intended us to eat (raw fruits, veggies, nuts.....), our bodies will balance itself out. You may lose some weight in the beginning especially if you are not used to eating that kind of food but as long as you are consuming enough calories and a variety of foods, you should be just fine. Good luck --- you are on your way to feeling the most amazing then you can imagine! Will I lose too much weight on a raw food diet?

  • Do bull terriers have to eat raw food like raw meat and veggies?

What is the significance behind feeding bull terriers raw foods?

Our cocker eats a high quality dry food.Do bull terriers have to eat raw food like raw meat and veggies?
Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (B.A.R.F.) is a popular and healthy dietary choice. Thousands, if not millions, of cat and dog owners feed their pets what they consider to be the most natural diet. Properly devised, it is a safe and healthy diet.

Commercial dog food became popular around the 1950's, and most brands include a lot of grains. Savvy dog and cat owners who feed commercial food carefully read the labels, and choose to feed what is called "super premium" food. You can't buy super premium food at the grocery store or big box stores.

I suspect that, without being aware of raw feeding, you might have misunderstood that this dog, or even its entire breed, must be fed a raw diet. That's not accurate, though.

A typical raw diet for a dog includes raw chicken backs (no...it's the cooked bones that are dangerous) and a mix of meat and vegetables, with raw, meaty bones as snacks. Many people who feed raw swear against feeding corn, soy, wheat, and low quality meat byproducts and meat meals.Do bull terriers have to eat raw food like raw meat and veggies?
The significance of feeding a dog raw meat is that a dog is a carnivore and lacks the ability to cook, so raw meat is what its body is supposed to digest.

Feeding it vegetables, grains, and dry food (no matter the quality) is NOT what dogs should be eating.Do bull terriers have to eat raw food like raw meat and veggies?
no perticular dog HAS to eat raw anything. all dogs can live off dry dog food. infact, it's better for them to be eating regular dog food.Do bull terriers have to eat raw food like raw meat and veggies?
You should feed them regular dog food. Raw meat and veggies could cause them to be sick.

Even some cooked veggies are a no no for dogs.

What component of raw food kills bacteria?

What component of raw food kills bacteria? What component of raw food kills bacteria?
Enzymes. ( I'm referring to fruit and veggies.) They go after protein and bacteria are essentially protein. Unfortunately, enzymes seem to ignore mold. But that doesn't account for things like ground meat. Apparently no enzymes are present.

Cooking breaks down the enzymes and bacteria. That's good for the time being, but the minute the food has been exposed to serving plates, forks, etc, more bacteria are introduced.

Almost sounds like y' can't win!

PS: (Colon cleansing is a gimmick.)What component of raw food kills bacteria?
Eating certain raw mushrooms will kill bacteria, but normally you don't want to kill bacteria. That's a concept introduced and repeated by mass media advertising. You need to consume and retain some healthy bacteria in your body to maintain your own health.

You simply rise vegetables and fruits and sprouted beans and grains and eat the food whole. Humans ate that way for thousands of years without the need for an antibiotic spray or cooking everything. The anaerobic bacteria smells bad and you instinctively will avoid spoiled food. What component of raw food kills bacteria?
Not clear what you mean and am not a scientist.

Raw foods cleanse the body of toxins and helps loosen all old buildup in the colon to prevent disease.

Yogurt builds up the good bacteria in your stomach.

Chili peppers work as antibiotics %26amp; various foods have properties to kill bacteria.

The idea behind raw foods is to grow a strong immune system to fight off disease.

    Hope this helps somehow

Is it okay to do a raw food cleansing diet if I'm on an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer?

I really want to do a raw food diet to help cleanse my body and shed about 10-15 pounds, but I don't know if it is safe to do this as I am on a high dose anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer. I am 5' 4" and about 145 lbs so 10-15 pounds is reasonable. Is it okay to do a raw food cleansing diet if I'm on an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer?
My personal answer, having ate raw food for sometime now, is to always consult a doctor (one that has experience with raw food lifestyle), and take things slowly. I found that eating a wide variety of raw food has improved all sorts of health problems i've had- asthma, depression, and allergies. I would recommend a book called "Raw Food Detox Diet" by Natalia Rose. It is extremely informative, gives detailed information without being complicated, and tells you exactly what to do. Raw food is always going to be healthier and more nutritious than processed food because it is 100% real food. Best of luck to you on your quest for health! Is it okay to do a raw food cleansing diet if I'm on an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer?
cleansing diets are, in general, kind of dangerous, although i'm not sure specifically about your meds. personally, i'd just work to exercise more (which will help mood anyway) and eliminate refined sugars and white breads/pastas from your diet. that should help with the 10 to 15 lbs, and you're less likely to gain it back.Is it okay to do a raw food cleansing diet if I'm on an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer?
I doubt it, eating well shouldn't have bad effects on your mood even if you are on medication.

Can fish be included in a raw food diet?

    For example salmon, mackerel, pilchard?

Do dogs need any fruit or vegetables to be healthy when feeding a raw food diet?

Can fish be included in a raw food diet?
Fruits and veggies are useless...I used to feed them, I cut them out, no noticeable difference except less gas. In my opinion, plant matter in a dog's diet is simply a filler. Fish is a great source of nutrients and Omegas. I don't feed raw fish though because of the risk of different intestinal parasites. I do feed canned salmon and mackerel occasionally, and I supplement with Salmon Oil daily for it's Omega 3 and 6. I wish there wasn't such a concern for parasites or I'd feed a lot more pork and fresh Salmon would probably be on the menu daily.

-edit- Some people feed raw fish anyway and make sure to have the vet test fecal exams on their checkup dates....that's fine I suppose...if you decide on raw fish? Make sure they don't have any spines, this may include you having to shear their fins off before feeding them to your dogs.

And to the person above me: That's a myth, dogs nor wolves eat the stomach contents of their prey items. The stomach wall is torn open and the contents shaken loose. The stomach itself is eaten, not the contents. Can fish be included in a raw food diet?
Yes, fish can be included as part of a raw diet. Here's additional information on feeding raw fish: http://www.rawlearning.com/fish.html

As far as the fruits and vegetables, it depends on who you ask. Many people do not think they are necessary and do not feed them. Their dogs seem to do well. Many people do think they are necessary in smaller amounts and do feed them. Their dogs also seem to do well. I do add some cooked vegetables to my dogs' diets, but not large quantities. Can fish be included in a raw food diet?
Yes, definitely, they are very healthy. Just start off a little bit at a time. When they get used to it a couple of times a week is ideal. Feed the fish whole, and don't worry about the bones, they should be fine as long as they are not cooked. However check with your local fish monger that the types of fish you are buying are all safe to eat raw, some aren't.

In regard to the answer above, I am sure that wolves do actually eat the whole carcass, including the stomach content and bones. In any case, feeding vegetables, as long as they're pureed, adds vitamins and nutrients to your dogs diet. Can fish be included in a raw food diet?
Yes! They are excellent sources of omega 3 fatty acids!

just introduce them slowly. my dogs have been raw fed since June and they will still throw up fish. (so currently I give can mack or salmon)

Smelt is another good fish to try.

Dogs can not digest vegetables unless theyre cooked and pureed, so biologically, since they don't have the bodies made to eat veggies, they don't need to have them.

And fruit can upset the acid balance in a dog's stomach.

I have completely based my dog's diets off of what a dog or wolf in the wild would eat, and what their stomachs do best on. dogs have a fast digestive tract, so the veggies will go right through without the body absorbing any of the nutrients. In the wild, wolves disregard the stomach content (the partially digested vegetation) of their prey.

there is something called green tripe, which are the raw intestines. dogs love it. it's not needed to have a nutritionally complete raw diet, but including it is what a dog in nature would eat. some people opt to feed that instead of vegetables.

Orijen's probably the closest to a raw diet you can get in a dry food. Any of the grain-free foods would probably be a good choice (like Innova Evo, Wellness Core, etc)What is the closest Dry dog food to Raw?
that's why you let it thaw in the fridge.
nothing is as good for your dog as raw...all bagged food is processed. tell your mom to give it another shot and keep it in the freezer.

only thaw what your gonna need for 2 days, not a week. and thaw it in the fridge cause bacteria will go hog wild if you thaw it on the counterWhat is the closest Dry dog food to Raw?
Orijen, Evo, Instinct (made by Nature's Variety), or Taste of the Wild
Raw is best but not always manageable.

When I can't feed raw I feed Taste Of The Wild. What is the closest Dry dog food to Raw?
There is no dry food that compares to raw as it is all processed and cooked - completley the opposite to raw which is fresh, unprocessed, additive, preservative free.

If your Mom is bothered about food spoiling, maybe you could remind her that you can feed raw meaty bones straight from the freezer.
Evo or orijen. Evo has on its website: "what to feed when you cant feed raw".

Dogs are capable of eating "ripe" meat. They bury bones for a reason.

Ask your mom to read up about raw, even if you do switch back to kibble, and let her come to terms with the fact that dogs are carnivores. They can eat a day/couple days old kill, its cats that need fresh meat and will typically pass up a kill if the didnt witness it or kill it.

My mom was the same way. I gave my dogs bones and her head started spinning, not literally, but in her tone of voice you could hear it. I had to reassure her I was doing the right thing. that it wasnt just an idea. She has started to see the difference in the dogs, but she never looked in to it for herself. I think she trust that they will be ok on the diet, but she doesnt like it when I fast them.

Have a talk with her before switching back. Make your point about why you should continue to feed raw, the point should be very concise. If she is skeptical about it, ask her to look at these sites: www.rawmeatybones.com

www.rawfed.com/myths (this is probably the one to start with)

    www.rawlearning.com

and you can also ask questions on this site: www.bigdogsporch.com, they are really helpful with dogs diets, especially raw.

If she looks into it willingly, you may get a second chance, plus she will know what you are doing.
Feed what nature intended. They are carnivores. Carnivores eat meat. Raw, warm, freshly killed meat. That's what dogs and cats have been eating for hundreds of thousands of years until some food company CEO invented what we see in the stores. That's why pets have so many growths, cancers, skin problems, hip problems, dirty teeth etc.

Do your research. It will piss you off to know the truth.

The e coli outbreak hasn't been found in north america yet so you should be safe so long as you practice good hygiene. Is it safe to eat raw food in America after the recent E. coli outbreak?
Its completly safe to eat raw vegtables just when your buying fruits or vegetables from the supermarket make sure you wash them off before eating them. You should only be worried about eating raw eggs and raw meat, only raw fish is semi safe to eat. The ecoli in food is not what you should be worried about, theres thousands of bacteria and viruses you could get from food but mainly raw meat. So salads and subway are 100% safe.

Hi Peace! I cured myself of breast cancer more than 10 years ago when i started a raw food diet! Arthritis, fibromyalgia and a long list of everything else went away and I'm still in perfect health today and still eat all raw foods. You don't have to make a lot of recipes you can eat mostly a lot of fruits, veggies and huge salads. You can make applesauce in a food processor with 2 Fresh apples and there are a lot of simple things you can make. too hard to go into everything here but raw recipe books would help and you can pick out the raw recipes that are basic and don't require a lot of ingredients. many of the raw recipe books have simple recipes. The expensive books with the color photos are more complicated and have more ingredients but you can get simple easy raw recipes in many other books. Nurse SueWhere do I start on a raw food diet?

Is a raw food diet more expensive than regular pet food?

I am hopefully getting a cat (or two) in a few weeks, and I've been reading about raw food diets for cats. It seems like a great idea but I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it. Is it expensive to keep cats on a raw food diet? Also, is it necessary to shop at a butcher, or is supermarket meat okay for cats?Is a raw food diet more expensive than regular pet food?
    Supermarket meat is perfectly fine.

As long as you have a freezer feeding raw is far, far less expensive than feeding the premium cat foods.

Watch for sales. Most grocery stores mail out sale flyers every week. Watch the flyers for good sales and stock up when meat is cheap. Stash it in the freezer and you're set.

Talk to the people in the meat department at your grocery store. They can get you deals and specials on things.

Meow Mix is one of the most disgustingly awful things you could ever feed a cat. Don't waste your money. If you're thinking kibble, go with Felidae, Natura, or Wellness. Is a raw food diet more expensive than regular pet food?
The most important thing is balance. I good balance is fresh meat (something like hamburger mince is good - just make sure it is not lean meat), tinned food and good quality dry food. Cats DO need to have roughage (ie. dry food) in their diet and the tinned food gives them something different as they like variety in their food. Our cats get a small handful of dry food in the morning and either mince or tinned food at night (they also like these two mixed together). Just be sure that they dry food and tinned food as no colouring added and minimal preservatives (preferable natural ones).

As far as the quality of the meat - it need to have around a 30% fat content which is why hamburger or pet mince is good) - it doesn't actually matte where you buy it as long as it fresh! Is a raw food diet more expensive than regular pet food?
Be sure to feed your kitties small enough cuts so that they won't choke on it. We like the Kirkland brand, which is sold at Costco, our cats thrive on it. Raw food for cats is basically meat, which doesn't need to be purchased as cat food. If it costs a lot I don't think you would be spending wisely. We also feed our kitties Whiskas pouch food, which is the same as canned but with less landfill. Treats for tartar control is also recommended. Is a raw food diet more expensive than regular pet food?
hold it. there are two types of raw food. prepared, and the one you make yourself. make it yourself and you may have to add taurine. depends on the meat you use.

I assume you are aware a raw diet is not just buy a hamburger and throw it at the cat.

as far as I know, raw is a lot more expensive.
raw food diet is the best way to go but if you cannot afford it, try the best bet, meow mix. its not canned and disgusting like most cat foods. and its affordable.

It must cost you a fortune.

Many raw foods are very toxic. Potatoes have been mentioned already, how do you feel about beans? Don't forget the red queen paradox, you need to run twice as fast to stay in the same place. This also goes for plants and many plants have developed poisons to stop themselves being eaten - these are destroyed by cooking properly. Also cooking breaks down things like cellulose and makes the energy available to humans. This is one of the biggest advantages humans have over other animals.

What makes you think that non-fat yogurt is in any way natural? Along with the rest of your list. The only reason you can eat this diet is because you are wealthy and middle class. If you had to live on $1/day you would really be eating properly on veggies only.
i wouldnt eat raw meat if this is what you mean if i have got this bit wrong then im sorry for misleading my self for not reading it properly but everything else you have listed is fine plus plenty of you can eat almost any thing raw wish i had you i wouldnt have to cook and you would be so cheap to look after im glad you are not faddy like some people are also liver is another good sorse for iron raw eggs are very good as i eat quite a lot hope this as helped you take careIs the Raw Food Diet the most healthy diet in the world?
It's just another trendy diet. It's definitely better than the atkins diet, but that's as far as i am willing to go.

I don't think so. Thats my opinion anyway.

You seem to have a good, balanced diet already, I can't see why you need to change it.
You're smart for trying to be proactive about your health. It looks like you're eating enough raw elements to be of great value. If you're eating other elements and they're not causing any problems then there's no reason to change.
A mixed diet is the best. 70% of your diet should be raw.

I decided to look that up online, while I found thousands of sites saying what a wonderful diet this was, I did not find anything about side effects or people that should or should not be on it. In fact I found nothing negative at all!!! It is fine to do some raw, some cooked, just as long as you make sure that you are keeping things in balance and being aware of getting all the nutrients you need. Even if you don't go 100%, you will still see some benefits from doing raw. I myself am raw, and have a lot more energy since switching over, and also never experience things like indigestion, gas, bloating, lethargy, constipation, diarrhea, amongst other more serious health problems. I have solid blood pressure, low cholesterol, and, I check in with my doctor for check-ups every so often, and I am healthier than ever.

I would definitely support incorporating raw food into your diet, even if it's just a little at a time.

As you'll see from this article:

raw food is very beneficial, but one must be careful about supplementing vitamin b12 so they don't develop a deficiency. Is it all or nothing when it comes to the benefits of a raw food diet?
Boutenka, even said that she noticed a difference in physical appearance amongst those that simply drank one green smoothie a day (even if they were still eating meat). So I would say yes!!
From what I've seen and heard, you will see benefits from a green smoothie with raw greens, fruits, and vegetables, regardless of your bad meat/bread/dairy eating habits. Of course, advocates indicate that cooked foods introduce harmful elements that are, by the way, addictive.

Cooked food is addictive and can be kicked with a 12-step process like any other addiction. Some people believe it is easier to be 100% true to raw foods. Personally, I avoid, but do not exclude bad food from my diet. I'll eat small portions of steak or desert if I'm a dinner guest, and people just assume that I'm dieting. Is it all or nothing when it comes to the benefits of a raw food diet?

    Good raw food recipes anyone?

I want to try and incorporate more raw food into my eating. Does anyone know any good raw recipes that you have tried or heard of? Any websites would be helpful also! Thanks so much!Good raw food recipes anyone?
    Cucumber and Avocado Sushi

    * 1 1/4 cups water

    * 1 cup uncooked glutinous white rice (sushi rice)

    * 3 tablespoons rice vinegar

    * 1 pinch salt

    * 4 sheets nori (dry seaweed)

    * 1/2 cucumber, sliced into thin strips

    * 1 avocado - peeled, pitted and sliced

    1. Combine the water and rice in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, or until rice is tender and water has been absorbed. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar and a pinch of salt. Set aside to cool.

    2. Cover a bamboo sushi mat with plastic wrap to keep the rice from sticking. Place a sheet of seaweed over the plastic. Use your hands to spread the rice evenly onto the sheet, leaving about 1/2 inch of seaweed empty at the bottom. Arrange strips of cucumber and avocado across the center of the rice. Lift the mat and roll over the vegetables once and press down. Unroll, then roll again towards the exposed end of the seaweed sheet to make a long roll. You may moisten with a little water to help seal. Set aside and continue with remaining nori sheets, rice and fillings.

    3. Use a sharp wet knife to slice the rolls into 5 or 6 slices. Serve cut side up with your favorite sushi condiments.Good raw food recipes anyone?

    Good raw food recipes anyone?
Okay I will check back and see, and if I don't know I will delete my answer, don't worry this is not for point gaming.

What do you mean by raw? As in fruits and veggies? Or grains? Or uncooked, healthy cereals mixed with other stuff like fruits and veggies?

Please, I will come back and check.

Just checked again after something reminded me of it. Okay, grains are good. There are plenty of grains besides wheat that are pretty healthy. I have a website about it. I, personally, love dried cherries, so you can put some grains and dried fruits into a bowl of grains. There are a few healthy cereals like cheerios and rice chex that you might like that you can put in a bowl. And there are nuts that are really tasty such as pecans, walnuts, um . . . there might be others that you like, too. Cashews are tasty, even lightly salted cashews. I am allergic so I didn't mention it right away. You could put some of those in. Make sure to only put a little cereal in if you even want to put any cereal in as they are loaded with carbs. I don't have any special mixes to tell you about. Just put in a lot of grains, throw in a little dried or fresh fruit, maybe some carrots or something, a handful or half a handful of cereal, and some nuts. It doesn't always have to be all together. You could go without the nuts or grains or something else.

  • Raw food: What is the differnce btw roasted and raw almonds?

I bought a book on raw food recipes, and it calls for raw almonds. Where do you buy raw almonds at?Raw food: What is the differnce btw roasted and raw almonds?
You can buy raw almonds at most health food stores. The difference is, if you planted a raw almond, it would sprout and grow, because it contains live enzymes. If you planted a roasted almond, it would do nothing, as the enzymes would have been killed off by the roasting (any temp over 107 degrees will destroy enzymes. Raw food is awesome-has everything needed to digest itself-makes it easier on the bodyRaw food: What is the differnce btw roasted and raw almonds?

Raw nuts are shelled but not processed. Roasted nuts are baked and usually salted.

A decent health food store has raw nuts. Raw peanuts are canned by Planters.Raw food: What is the differnce btw roasted and raw almonds?
like any nuts, roasted generally liberates a really good flavor. i am pretty sure you can get raw almond slivers at wall mart...close to the baking supplys.
Please don't buy into the "raw" food fad. They try to claim that you get all these enzymes and food hormones from the raw food, but that's just bogus. By the time the food goes through the acid bath that exists in your stomach, all the proteins (which is what enzymes and hormones are) are denatured, which is also what happens during cooking. The only thing that cooking destroys that your body doesn't are a few vitamins that are heat labile (destroyed by heat).

Is it ok to freeze food on a raw food diet?

I know that freezing, as with any process, alters molecular structure.

Obviously you couldn't heat it in the microwave but a raw food soup could be defrosted in the fridge, although it might take a couple of days to defrost.

    Does anyone do this?

Is it advisable? Is it ok to freeze food on a raw food diet?
It's ok to freeze raw food. For example, frozen bananas are excellent to use for smoothies and home-made ice-creams, without any dairy. I cut them into small chunks, freeze them and put them in the blender or food processor. Smoothies and ice-creams turn out very smoothly that way.

If you make raw soups and make a few portions at a time, you could freeze the soup for a few weeks. Take it out the night before the next day you'd like to eat it. Either in the fridge for a refreshing summer meal or let it defrost at room temperature.

Here is a great raw soup recipe: 1 avocado, 3-4 carrots, fresh cilantro, fresh or ground ginger, 2 cups of water.

Blend everything together and split into portions. Store in containers and put in the freezer.

Or try this raw dessert: Mix 1 Avocado, lemon or lime juice and for the crust, use 1-2 cups ground almonds and same amount of grated coconut. Place in food processor, spread on round tray and put avocado cream on top. Pre-cut into slices and store in freezer. Put slices out to defrost in advance, but ideally in the fridge and enjoy!

Remove from processor and mold onto a plate in a round circle about 1 1/2 in thick.

    For Frosting:

In a food processor, combine dates and lemon juice until smooth and creamy.

    1-1.5 cups soaked almonds

    0.5 cups dates

    1 tsp. cinnamon

    0.5 tsp. nutmeg

    5. Slice up the remaining strawberries and bananas.

    6. Layer the sorbet and fruit slices over the pie crust.

    Remarks on the recipe:

    1) It's an excellent pie - I had a chance to eat some at an earlier meeting.

    2) In step 4, you can use a blender instead of a Champion juicer. Just let the fruit thaw some before putting it in blender.

You don't need weird foods or even recipes. Raw food means uncooked. Your basic salad without additives. My brother did a raw food diet for about 3 weeks to clear out his system while they tried to determine what he was allergic to. Everything came from his personal garden. His allergy turns out to be an additive that they spray on many grocery store foods to retain color.

Where do you get protein from on a Raw Food Diet?

I want to start a Raw Food Diet to see if I can feel any benefits from it and to test my willpower. Does anyone know any good sources of protein on a raw food diet? Or any good recipe ideas?

Thank you very much!Where do you get protein from on a Raw Food Diet?
A raw food diet is very good for you, however to just jump into eating nothing but raw can have some grave effects on your body if you are not aware of the pitfalls. Eating nothing but raw food with NO meat, will leave you vitamin B-12 deficient and since it is stored in the liver, it takes some time to see the effects of this. If you will notice, most people eating only raw food look placid and not totally healthy. You need fat and animal fat is what we were designed to eat. The problem is that the typical animal fat you get from grain fed animals is very bad for you. Grain feeding animals is much cheaper and profit is king over health in America. Grass fed dairy cows, for instance, live 4 times longer than grain fed cows. This is because cows are a big fermentation vat and feeding them grains does what it does to people, makes them inflamed and sick, so they give them antibiotics. Those drugs destroy the intestinal bacteria in cows, just like they do in humans and you get bad bacteria fermenting in the "vat" causing the cows to be sick. The fat then runs through the meat (marbling) and that is where the toxins are stored. Yes, it's more tender, but devastates your health. So there is a good arguement for eating raw. The problem is that you need that animal fat to be truly healthy. So, the best thing is to get and only eat GRASS FED ANIMALS, like the primitive people did.

Eating raw food puts a burden on your kidneys and if they are strong, there is no problem, however, if you are like most Americans, your kidneys are NOT strong due to all the toxic build up in your body from eating the SAD diet (standard American diet). So you want those kidneys to be strong or you could create a very serious problem for your health. The best rule of thumb is to eat 50% raw food and the rest cooked, but not cooking it on high heat. I use water to cook grass fed hamburger in a skillet and it works great. That way, the temperature never exceeds a high temperature like you get in using oil.

When cooking a grass fed steak, like New York, cook it for about an hour using 6 brickets and the steak placed to the side of the burning brickets, that way, the temperature is not too high and it cooks very tender and juicy. You only need to heat the outside of a piece of meat because that is where the bacteria are, not the inside, unless it is hamburger where it is all mixed up. The fat from grass fed animals is on the outside of the meat, not in it like grain fed animals. The fat is good for you and contains lots of omega 3 fatty acids and is balanced with more omega 3 than salmon if the grass fed cows are not "finished" before slaughter. The contain lots of CLA, vitamin E and K as well and loaded with minerals that nourish your body.

Protein sources from raw food is generally done by combining foods because each food has some amino acids that others don't and by combining them, you come close to creating a "complete" protein. Many vegans and vegetarians rely on SOY as a complete protein, but when the do this, they get all kins of booby prizes and become less healthy. SOY is not a good food, unless it is fermented and the bacteria get the booby prizes. Soy will cause males to lose 1/2 of their sperm count, make man boobs from the phytoestrogens, and their metabolism will slow down due to the goitrogens in soy. Soy is loaded with the heavy metal, Aluminum that also greatly affects the thyroid gland. In fact, SOY is a nitrogen fixing plant that is good for putting nitrogen into the soil to help other plants grow better, but it also is used to remove the Aluminum and when you eat it, you get the booby prize.

There are some very good books on raw foods that are excellent. A good thing to do is go to a RAW FOOD RESTAURANT and look at their menu and then get a Raw Food Cookbook and get creative.

As part of that process, you will want to eat lots of fermented foods and drinks. Kombucha, homemade kefir from RAW MILK of grass fed cows, sauerkraut, fermented vegetables are all foods that will boost your immune system and help you become more healthy.

EDIT: "Boreus" you are wrong about the amount of protein a person needs because it is relatively easy to calculate. There is an average amount that has been accepted as a general rule that fits most people: 40% carbs, 30% fats, and 30% proteins. The issue is not really the amount of protein, but the "completeness" of the protein. Your body has a "utilization curve" for protein based on the amount of each amino acid combination in a complete protein. Eggs are used as the standard for this. All other proteins are compared to the "curve" found in eggs. A good example of this is the combination of beans and corn. Both of these foods have different amounts of amino acids and when combined, they closely can match what is found in eggs relative to the levels of each amino acid level. So by combining these two items, you get a pretty good complete protein.

A person can get very good complete protein by eating 1 whole egg per day. Eating just the whites is NOT GOOD SCIENCE. It is dumb and being promoted by ignorant people who believe the cholesterol in eggs is bad for you. If you eat just the whites, you create a protein deficiency in your body and are not getting the other 1/2 amino acid compliment found in the yolk. The yolk contains all the minerals as well.

If you eat an amount of protein that your body cannot use, your body converts that protein into saturated fat that feeds your heart and is used in the body in many places. To demonize saturated fat the way it is being done comes from the dogma created by the ego maniac Ancel Keys from his now refuted and totally wrong "lipid hypothesis" that saturated fat somehow causes heart disease.

good luck to youWhere do you get protein from on a Raw Food Diet?

Is it possible to be healthy on the raw food diet?

Is it possible to be healthy on a raw food diet? I've been considering going vegan for some time now, and everything I've read about the raw food diet has been incredible (as far as the benefits go). I'm already slim, and I don't want to lose too much weight, however. Can I go on raw food diet and still keep my weight in a healthy range? Is it possible to be healthy on the raw food diet?
Yes, it is entirely possible to be healthy on a raw food diet. In fact, there is no healthier diet you can have. By eating foods in their most nutrient-rich state (uncooked), you are providing your body with the greatest gift you can give it. I am a raw vegan and have been for over a year now. I am also a competitive athlete. I have never been healthier. And yes, it is possible to gain weight on a raw vegan diet. But, just like any diet, if you consume more calories than you expend, you will gain weight. It's important not to eat too much fruit and fat and try to concentrate more on low-glycemic foods like leafy green vegetables, sprouts and sea vegetables.

Some excellent resources are: www.therawfoodworld.com, www.rawfoodrehab.com and www.renegadehealth.com

Best wishes to you on your journey to health. Is it possible to be healthy on the raw food diet?
Yes but as with any other diet no one diet fits all. Raw food included. In fact if you follow macrobiotics it states that only people who live in cold climates and of a certain constitutional type can benefit from it. Its main basis is that heat over 116F can denature enzymes that help you digest food.
A mostly raw vegan diet is not good for you. Never mind the rawfood propaganda. A lot of food is more easily digested when it is cooked first. You may end up losing a lot of weight and the diet is very strict and alienating. The idea that "all cooked food is poison" has no basis in reality. Some vegetables may be fine for you raw, but many others have to be cooked for you to enjoy the nutritional benefits. Is it possible to be healthy on the raw food diet?
In, some cases, nope. People whose diets is solely on eating raw foods increase the risk of food poisoning and increased risk of food-borne illness.

A raw diet is great, as long as it is the proper raw diet. There are many websites that can help you. Also, vets usually know NOTHING about nutrition (which is why the foods they recommend are crap like Iams and Purina), so if you want to talk to someone contact a canine nutritionist. A 13 week old puppy should be eating three times a day, and you can switch that to two times a day anywhere between 4 and 6 months. There is also no need for a dog that young to be getting treats of any kind unless you are using them as training treats (which since you said biscuits in the morning I am guessing you are not)Is it ok to feed a 13week old Pibull a raw food diet and dry biscuits?
This would be a problem. You don't describe exactly what your "raw foods" consist of but it is doubtful it is the required and balanced nutrition required or recommended for a growing baby. Talk to your vet about nutrition. It is so important for the development and growth of his bones and neurological system. He is a high energy puppy so his nutritional needs are great right now and lay the foundation for his health for the rest of his life. Giving him "biscuits" in the morning is inadequate to the point of being cruel (from a nutritional standpoint - not meant to be a harsh comment). Think about it. He has been asleep in his crate or where ever all night. He has not had any calorie intake since the afternoon meal and probably no water for hydration. So his first meal of the day should be hearty, of good nutritional level, and satisfying. Puppies need to eat often because they can't eat much at a time. Otherwise, their blood sugar can really plummet and this is a real problem for a baby. He could go to sleep and not wake up (I know someone who lost their puppy this way - he was not intentionally starving his puppy but he didn't know any better and was feeding the little guy like an adult dog). Again, you should consider getting some advice from your vet about good food choices for your puppy. The diet you describe is incomplete to meet your puppy's needs and you want to offer him the best possible opportunity to be strong and healthy. Is it ok to feed a 13week old Pibull a raw food diet and dry biscuits?

There are some good sites and books on "raw" food diets for dogs. Some people believe a raw diet is healtheir for dogs.

Do be careful the foods are appropriate %26amp; not spoiled. Dogs can get food poisoning.
I have never heard of a "raw" diet. But I think pet foods are probably better. If you are concerned about nutrition, maybe you could ask your vet or your local PetSmart?

if eaten raw you don't lose the vitamins you may lose through the cooking process

raw foods mean a lot more chewing which makes over eating harder!

I'm new to the Colorado Springs area and have 2 border collie pups on a raw diet. Does anyone know any good places to find good quality raw food in the area? I'm especially interested in somewhere that will grind chicken backs. Also, any holistic vet recommendations would be much appreciated. Thank you!Good places to find raw food in CO springs?

I just checked and it looks like there might be some co-op groups in Colorado (we have them in California)

There was a link for the Rocky Mountain Raw feeders group, but the link did not work.

Check out this link it has links for Colorado Support for Raw Feeding, vets that support raw feeding etc.

Is it ok to feed a puppy raw dog food?

I asked a friend about dog food for my new puppy and they suggested Bravo Raw food. Is this good for a maltese puppy? Is this better for a puppy than other brands, like Canidae or Innova? Is it ok to feed a puppy raw dog food?
Raw is fantastic if you do it properly! :)

    Here is a great resource:

First you need to research and decide that you are comfortable feeding raw. If you are comfortable with that type of diet then yes you can start a puppy on it. My now five year old was weaned to raw by the breeder and when I picked her up at 8 weeks she was eating chicken necks.
I think a raw diet is great, but I wouldn't feed that to a puppy and I'd want to feed it fresh food, balanced diet. Here's a good site for that:

When you think about it, a wolf cub in the wild does not eat the meat until it's a bit older. The mother regurgitates the food she eats and the cub eats that. Also, in the wild, dogs eat rotting carcasses as well as fresh kill, and all kinds of garbage. Only the strong survive. Is it ok to feed a puppy raw dog food?
I think your dog would get about the same nutrition from a good quality dry dog food.

I am a raw feeder but I would not use Bravo Raw food.
ya raw dog food i think would be fineIs it ok to feed a puppy raw dog food?
It's completely fine to start your puppy on raw - in fact, it's much easier to raise a pup on raw then to switch him over as an adult. I have raised my Dogue De Bordeaux on raw (I belong to a co-op and purchase a variety of RMB's (raw meaty bones- beef, chicken, ostrich, buffalo, etc) balance that with organ meat, a small amount of fruits and veggies, yogurt, fish once a week and the occasional egg in the shell. Dogs systems are not meant to process cooked food. I also switched my 6 year old dog to raw feeding and she has never looked better (she was very allergy ridden for years on super premium kibbles including wellness, evo, canidae).

    Good Luck!
chuck the puppy a big jucicey kanga leg. That should last a few days.
Raw food is good, but if you're going to go raw, you should do it all the way- fresh, whole, raw meats, not raw meat processed into dog food. Any dog of any age can eat raw.

I would ask a vet. call the vet's office and ask one of his tech's. which food the vet promotes.
Raw food can lead to "food poisoning", and are not well balanced for your pets requirements.
In my opinion, nothing is better than Canidae or Wellness.
