Does anyone feed their cats raw food?

I've been reading some stuff about the benefits of feeding raw food to cats and I'd like some advice please.

How do I start, for example.

My kitten is 10 weeks old. How much does she need to eat each day?Does anyone feed their cats raw food?
I do now and then, but I'd advice you try drjon@petplace.com .They are real vets and its FREE. Luck from Brian%26amp;StimpyDoes anyone feed their cats raw food?
be careful about it and then only feed low fat stuff such as steak / fish --

i would stick to just beef and fish that has been frozen and then thawed in order to kill any parasites etc
Awww! cute! I started mine off on tuna and fed her a handful a day along with her normal food, then increased as she got older. Kittens %26amp; Cats love chicken aswell. Not red meat!Does anyone feed their cats raw food?
I have fed my cats a raw meat diet for seven years and believe me they don't have parasites, infections or poor health because of it. Cats have been eating raw meat for millions of years and there wouldn't be cats around if it weren't the appropriate diet for them. It can hardly be labeled a "fad". It is more appropriate to apply that to commercal cat food which has only been available for about fifty years!

I believe it is not advisable for a ten-week old kitten and two to three months is a good time to start on raw food. I have sent you a personal email about it and suggested a Yahoo group for you to join where the members are preparing their own raw diets for their cats.
i don't really know how big a cat is at 10 weeks(though it seems a bit early to me), but i'm fairly sure that there is nothing wrong with feeding them raw meat. better than kitekat or whiskas or whatever artificial food you'd buy.

i guess you should be careful weather your cat knows how to chew or not. it's really important that you don't chop the meat up in too small pieces, because it will have dificulties breathing and one of mine almost happened to choke on it. i advise you give it chunks, big enough to practice their chewing and overall teeth-to-meat relations. ;)

a note: (raw) meat makes animals (and people) more agressive.Does anyone feed their cats raw food?
i dont,
store bought food has the proper nutrition, and yes cats in the wild eat raw meat but we are not talking about wild cats we're talking about domesticated animals who aren't used to it. last time my cat caught a mouse and ate it she threw it up 10 minutes later.
no never feed your cat raw food
This is interesting...what raw food would you be feeding your cat other than maybe a mouse or two? I have never heard of this...could you expand on it? Thanks.
i did but my vet said never to do that as its too hard on the stomach and causes the animals to become infested with parasites.
my cats have both raw and canned food also complete biscuits older cats benefit more from raw foods such as liver tongue etc as its easier for them to digest, they say a portion of food for a cat is the size of a mouse (just a guide line)
yes tuna is their fav
I give my cat raw chicken only (added to some tinned food), lean meat and a little bit of raw chicken livers added every few days. That's all she gets added. The meat is lean so it's healthier, raw cause cooking destroys most of the goodness it contains, and the livers for taurine, which they definitely do need.

I forget.... how many brans of tins was it that got recalled?

My cat's just had her shots two days ago, and the vet (brand new vet, we live in a different country now) had all sorts of comments aobut how stunningly healthy she is. I asked him about the meat, and he said to avoid red meat, pork, etc, but that the amount of raw chicken I was giving her would

For the record, she has none of the problems and diseases you are so convinced that she will have. It substitutes her diet nicely. And it shows.

To all the sceptics:

If someone chooses to not feed their cat a specific diet, that's fine, but respect the choice of another who has done their homework and chooses to do so.

it is a lot of work but you should get the book: "the new natural cat" by Anitra Frazier. tells you EVERYTHING
well my answer to this questions is that i feed my cat all the food i eat and the raw food he eats is tuna maybe fish and my cat is perfectly healthy
Cats are born to eat raw food. If you leave a hungry cat on the street what will she do? Of course she'll eat raw food it's natural. However, if you want to feed your kitten raw food i think you should wait for her to grow up a little bit and try giving her tiny portions of raw food now till she get used to it :)
Yeah I feed my cats raw food sometimes.

Cats, unlike dogs, stop when they're full. Just put down a small plate of raw (but well washed) fish, or ground beef, or whatever you want. The leaner the meat the better. However, I think it's more trouble then it's worth because getting something like fish clean enough to serve would be very difficult. Ground beef gets clean enough only through cooking. I would recommend buying lunch meat from Safeway. That has to be clean.
Your kitty is only ten weeks old and you may have made up your own mind about what to feed him or her, but they haven't a choice. I personally think that at ten weeks old and especially so young, you should at least ring your local vet and ask their opinion, you don't want to feed it raw food to make it ill. It's only got a small belly.
I don't but if you want to you will only be decreasing your cat's life expectancy. There is a reason for cat food.
no well i dont because it useally makes them be sick. but sometimes its ok as long as it the food your giveing it looks and smells ok but i dont.
I would check with the vet if you want the best and most qualified response.

Personally I never did - except when I was cooking I did through her the odd bit but otherwise I always gave her cooked food.

Good luck
It may be okay to feed them very little raw meat but I would check with my vet.
I actually did some reading on this the other day - seems the raw food diet is becoming popular with all the cat food recalls. From what I read, I decided not to go with it though , because it seems to be a similar sort of thing as human "fad diets", and in some cases if you cat has sensitive kidneys (you may not always realize it right away), the higher protein content could cause problems. Not to mention the risks of disease or parasites to both humans and the pets if using true raw food...

I really think I'm going to stick to my regular brand- "Natural Balance". Their ultra premium formulas weren't part of the recalls (some of their other formulas were, but not their main), but I get mine from Superpets and they're fairly quick with pulling recalls off the shelves. Be careful - sometimes newer cat foods or food fads can cause more damage than good!
There is huge debate in the canine world at the moment about raw food, a lot of people believe it is good to feed your dog a raw diet - including chicken, rice, vegetables etc. However, if dog owners want to do it, the diet MUST be well balanced.

You may find it is the same for cats.

Personally, I would stick to as good a quality cat food for what i could afford.
for starters, some people will say no, but im different, cats are known to eat wild life, which to me is a raw product. but its in their nature to do so.. i wouldnt give her anything raw just yet.. i would wait till she is at least 1 and a half 2years..

as you will have to keep up with the worming tablets..

also a small raw sausage wont hurt them to much.. so best of luck

i forgot to add, that it is cooked meats like steak and chop meats or roasts are the meats you shouldnt give your cats.. as this can apparently tear at their stomach muscles..
Personally I don't believe in that. Raw foods have diseases and cats can get sick, just like Humans can. My theroy is... if I wouldn't eat it... I won't let my cat.
I can't directly answer your question, but I can point you in the right direction where you can find more information.

P.S. Most vets get their nutrition education at the hands of people being paid or sponsored by Hills. Vested interest in "teaching" vets and pet owners that commercially prepared foods is the way to go much? Oh yeah. I am fully supportive of anyone who wants to do read up on real nutrition and give their pets homemade meals. Imagine a pediatrition telling parents they are too stupid to understand children's nutrition so best to only feed their kids Pediasure? wouldn't happen.
If I ever eat fish, before I cook it I give my cats some raw fish and they love it. I don't know if there is any benefit to giving them it though. I just give it to them cos they like it, and it stops them eating the fish out of my pond.
No No No! Raw food is no good for cats or kittens. Thats why they make cat and kitten food and milk
Animals that eat raw food can get very sick from food that is not cooked. They can get salmonella and or tape worm from meat that is not cooked. I would make sure that the meat is cooked really good. It depends on what you are going to feed her. If it is dry cat food(not recalled food) it tells on the can or the package. I have a container that will hold up to a 2 cups of cat food (dry) and at the bottom of it hold about 1/2 cup of food and it is enough for the cat because when that is gone it will slide down and there will be more so she can eat. I hope this will help. I saw a show on tv and they said not to have humans or animals raw food because animals and humans can get tape worm from raw food. I saw how long the tape worm was and it was not a pretty site. Don't give your cat raw food.
