Considering that the dog food used would be 5 or 6 star rating? Is feeding raw food or commercial dog food to dogs cheaper?
I use to feed Blue Buffalo, a fairly high quality food. My ONE GSD would go through 2 40lb bags a month, so that was 100$ a month for one GSD.
I now feed raw to my TWO GSDs, and I feed both of them for roughly.... let's see... roughly 30-40$ a month. Chicken at .58 cents a lb, saw trimmings at .89 cents a lbIs feeding raw food or commercial dog food to dogs cheaper?
Yes feeding raw can be cheaper than most of the really premium commercial dog foods out there. It can also be the same or more expensive if you are doing things like buying nothing but high grade organic meats.
"but since it is baked, you don't need to worry about bacteria and parasites. " Really pasta? Then how do you explain kibble recalls for Salmonella?
BTW plenty of people around the word still eat raw meat. Either as a special occasion or part of their everyday diet. Proper food handling skills and shopping wisely lowers the odds of those issues cropping up when feeding raw.
Also the average raw feeder doesn't shop weekly. Its called a freezer and stocking up.
Definitely commercial dog food is more expensive in the long run and could be harmful. And the quality of meat in a can of dog food is not as good as you think. It is usually tainted with very high concentration of preservatives.
However, raw food is also not good. There could be contaminated with parasites and microbes.
My logic is like this: Would you eat raw food or preserved food your whole life? If not then why are we feeding these food to your pet day in and day out? There are some research done on commercial dog food such as available at the source below you may want to read.
I have 4 dogs and one of them is already over 17 years old which is equivalent to 119 human years, and she is still kicking active and healthy. The recipes and most important how to care for my dog I use are from the source below which could be a contributing factor to her longevity.
Hope this information helps. Is feeding raw food or commercial dog food to dogs cheaper?
Feeding raw can be as expensive or cheap as you make it.
I feed cheap, yet healthy. I pay less to feed a dog per year than somebody who feeds Pedigree. The only dog foods cheaper than the raw diet I feed are Ol Roy, Nunn-Better, and equally crappy foods.
PS: Didn't Blue Buffalo just have some recalls? Oh yeah! They did! I'd rather my dog get "parasites" that can be taken care of by regular deworming than die like all those people's animals did in the "big" recall a few years ago!
-edit- KH your "logic" is illogical...because you compared a human's dietary requirements to that of a carnivore. YOU shouldn't eat raw foods. ALL other animals besides human beings SHOULD! By your logic how do you explain the thousands of species of carnivores on this planet who're alive despite the lack of opposable thumbs or the knowledge of fire? Guess you didn't think that far.
My Maltese has been with me for 15 years and she has survived a major operation involving the removal of her uterus. All these years, I have fed her with natural cooked food from dog recipes. I am quite wary of those commercial food in the market. In fact, she loves natural food and even fruits such as apples! Is feeding raw food or commercial dog food to dogs cheaper?
Tons cheaper. On my cats and dog I was dropping close to $100 a month on decent kibble.
On raw, I'm spending about $20 a month for 3 cats and my sheltie.
