My holistic vet thinks it's ideal since most raw feeders can't add the hair/fur of the animals into the diet so psyllium husks replace that well as they contain no carbs but lots of soluble and insoluble fibre.
What do you think of this logic?
Thanks!Psyllium husk as a fibre source in a raw food diet?
Not necessary. At all. Fiber doesn't replace fur, and fur really isn't needed anyway...it's a cutesy idea that dogs need to eat fur to digest well...but it hasn't played out in reality. The theory was a good one, but it's a failed one. Dogs do fine on a raw diet with no fur/extra fiber. Also "raw food" diet sounds like you're feeding veggies...feeding veggies = Waste of time....they're only digestable if finely pureed (which damages the cell wall) or cooked (which also damages the cell wall). And even if you puree or cook? The nutrients in the plant matter aren't necessary if you feed a well balanced raw diet soley containing animal protein sources including organs.Psyllium husk as a fibre source in a raw food diet?
Dogs are carnivores as are their wolf descendants, they ONLY NEED MEAT.
They dont need fiber either because they have a very short bowel and digest and expel waste fast, they don't need to massage the lining with fiber like humans do. If you are in love with this theory, feed then cow hide sticks instead. this also might simulate them eating a whole animal, has low calories and is good for their teeth and gums.Psyllium husk as a fibre source in a raw food diet?
Totally agree with Curtis.
