Why have many big food companies lobbied to pass laws in many states to make it illegal to purchase raw unprocessed foods directly from farmers? I'm also told that the FDA will take your livestock fine and put you in jail for selling raw milk. What's this country coming to?
I think that's insane ... What's the harm in purchasing raw unprocessed foods directly from farmers? How could the government ever make锘?that illegal? Why have many big food companies lobbied to pass laws in manystates to make it illegal to purchase raw milk?
I think that it's totally mad, too. :(
Though ot might be for health concerns. One of the reasons they process it to get rid of harmful bacteria or viruses or something.

Its not insane. Raw milk can and does contain harmful bacteria that can make humans quite ill. If given to infants it can prove fatal. Government regulations require dairy products to go through some process of pasteurization to remove the harmful bacteria. Of course it is not in all milk and milk products, but every two or three years you will hear about a rash of sickness and maybe a death or two by groups getting ahold of some bad raw milk, more common in immigrant communities, and generally in the southeast and texas, were refrigeration during transportation can lead to bacteria growth. Why have many big food companies lobbied to pass laws in manystates to make it illegal to purchase raw milk?
It is totally unregulated as far as the FDA would see it. What are you going to do when you get food that makes you sick? Will you blame the farmer for poor conditions and accept you are better buying food that is regulated by the FDA? I'll admit that even regulated food CAN have problems. The idea is YOUR safety. If you want to get in to well you are fine taking things in your own hands and taking that risk fine, but that doesn't matter. If you buy food from a FARMER'S MARKET it comes straight from the farm in some cases, depends where you go. Where I live buying crops from a farm is legal. Crops are pretty safe though. Meat is where the real risk can come, and some risk with milk as well. Milk it depends on the farm. Yeah if it is your cow or you know where the milk comes from it can be safe. If you don't know who you are buying from though you are taking a big risk trying that. Why have many big food companies lobbied to pass laws in manystates to make it illegal to purchase raw milk?
Given that unpasteurized milk has no benefits, but plenty of disadvantages over pasteurized, not sure why that's a problem.
Most Americans wouldn't drink it straight from the teet anyway. Have you? I have.
Pasteurization is good.
